A note to my lovebug: on the 7th April 2025 we were making this bread together. You’re 6 years old and are already worried that you’ll forget what I’m teaching you by the time you’re an adult. So, here it is, written out. I told you I would put it somewhere safe. Remember, I’m making this for you because I love you and I know you love this bread, and want you to feel better from all the good nutrition it gives you. I hope in years to come, that you’ll make it for those that you love, and perhaps teach your kids or kids special to you how to make a lovely loaf of Irish bread. Just in case you forget, we make bread together often. You like this with peanut butter. However, your favourite is porridge bread!

Few things are nicer than a decent loaf of bread. I love making this one as it turns out well each time and takes no time at all to mix togther. Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 400g wholemeal flour
  • 100g white flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 500ml buttermilk

How to make it

  • Preheat your oven at 200 degrees Celsius.
  • Smear butter on the inside on your bread tin to prevent the loaf from sticking or use grease proof paper.
  • Add the dry ingredients to a bowl.
  • Pour in the buttermilk and stir until mixed.
  • Spoon into the baking tin and flatten out the top of it. Using a knife, draw a criss cross in the top of the bread.
  • Bake for 10 mins at 200 degrees and then reduce heat to 180 and baked for a further 45 min.
  • To check if it’s done, remove the bread from the bread tin, knock on the bottom of the loaf, if it sounds hollow it’s done!
